8 reasons why you should buy organic

To buy organic or not organic? That’s the question and a much-debated matter indeed.

Some insist on buying organic produce only and using 100% organic care and household products. Sceptics, on the other hand, question the reliability of organic labels, or the health benefits of organic products.

Whether you belong to the first group or the latter, I’m not here to judge but to share objective information that will hopefully help you make the best choices for you and your family’s health.

Personally, I’m somewhere in the middle. I buy mostly organic for the simple reason I like to feed myself and my kids products that are clean and don’t contain harmful toxins like pesticides, herbicides, metals, and hormones. But I won’t freak out if I have to buy non-organic products once in a while out of convenience. I just try to make it an exception.

In fact, what matters is the “total load”. This is the buildup of harmful factors in our system that contribute to the development of certain modern diseases like cancer, diabetes, obesity, heart diseases, etc. These factors include chemicals in our diets, in personal care or household products, and in pollution, but other contributors also include excess sugar, nutrient deficiencies, or stress. Individually, these factors might not be so harmful, but together they can mean trouble.

Therefore, eliminating or reducing your intake of chemicals through food is like picking low-hanging fruit when it comes to keeping your total load as low as possible.

8 reasons why I recommend buying organic food:

1. They’re free of chemicals

2. Organic produce contains more nutrients, especially vitamin C, iron, magnesium, and calcium

3. Organic food is often fresher because it’s free of preservatives

4. It tastes better

5. It’s better for the environment

6. Organically raised animals are happier animals that haven’t been given growth hormones or antibiotics

7. Certified organic means GMO-free

8. It produces less waste, because also the “ugly” veggies that wouldn’t be approved by supermarkets are sold in organic stores and farmer’s markets
